We Want to Face White Jesus and #toxicWestmont
It has come to the attention of members of the Westmont community that a stained glass image of Jesus Christ in the Voskuyl Memorial Chapel represents Jesus as a White-appearing man, standing on North America. A significant portion of the Westmont community, including students, alumni, faculty, and staff feel concerned about the symbolic and theological impact of having such an image centrally located on our campus, and we request that the Westmont administration and/or board enter into dialogue about this image, toward the end of removing it. Members of the Westmont community that sign the petition will have their names kept private.
In addition to the removal of the image of White Jesus in the Voskuyl Memorial Chapel, we expect to see the changes requested in the student demands issued in April 2019 and again in June 2020, to ensure a institutional level shift in racial climate. We expect that the changes be made in a timely, transparent, and public manner. We reject the temptation to focus solely on individual relationships and seek change in policy, practice and culture.
